      Hi everyone,
      I’ve been working on optimizing local development workflows for Cinema 4D, specifically focusing on how custom scripts handle background tasks, asset synchronization, and module reloading during active development.
      With the community sharing great tools here recently—from debug managers to multi-render engine wrappers—I wanted to start a topic on standardizing pipeline patterns and keeping C4D responsive during heavy processing.

      A few key challenges I’d love to gather insights on:

      • Thread Safety & UI Blocking: How are you structuring long-running operations (like heavy geometry processing or batch asset syncs) to ensure C4D’s UI remains fluid?

      • Module Live-Reloading: When building complex multi-file plugins, what is your preferred approach for hot-reloading modified code without constantly restarting C4D?

      • External Integrations: For those connecting Cinema 4D with external dashboards, cloud assets, or custom web development systems, what protocols or lightweight local servers (e.g., WebSocket, REST endpoints) are you finding most reliable?

      I'm currently drafting a modular boilerplate to help clean up these overhead tasks in C4D Python project setups. If anyone is interested, I’d be happy to share code snippets here once refined!Looking forward to hearing how others are tackling these bottlenecks in their pipelines.

        Hello @davidz,

        Welcome to the Maxon developers forum and its community, it is great to have you with us!

        Getting Started

        Before creating your next postings, we would recommend making yourself accustomed with our forum and support procedures. You did not do anything wrong, we point all new users to these rules.

        • Forum Overview: Provides a broad overview of the fundamental structure and rules of this forum, such as the purpose of the different sub-forums or the fact that we will ban users who engage in hate speech or harassment.
        • Support Procedures: Provides a more in detail overview of how we provide technical support for APIs here. This topic will tell you how to ask good questions and limits of our technical support.
        • Forum Features: Provides an overview of the technical features of this forum, such as Markdown markup or file uploads.

        It is strongly recommended to read the first two topics carefully, especially the section Support Procedures: How to Ask Questions.

        About your First Question

        Please excuse the long delay. Please also have a look at our Support Procedures: How to Ask Questions, topics should not contain multiple questions as this tends to produce chaotic topics.

        Thread Safety & UI Blocking: How are you structuring long-running operations (like heavy geometry processing or batch asset syncs) to ensure C4D’s UI remains fluid?

        Cinema 4D does not offer true parallelism in its API in the sense of Python's multiprocessing, only simple de-blocking threading. I.e., you cannot make things faster, you can only make them not block things. This can be achieved via c4d.threading, specifically C4DThread.

        Examples:
        https://developers.maxon.net/docs/py/2027_0_0/search.html?q=C4DThread
        https://developers.maxon.net/forum/topic/14395/c4d-threading-in-python-doesn-t-work-as-expect/5

        Module Live-Reloading: When building complex multi-file plugins, what is your preferred approach for hot-reloading modified code without constantly restarting C4D?

        You can use mxutils.LocalImportPath, it has a builtin module reload feature within the bounds of trivial import processes, i.e., imports that do not have to happen in a certain order. When you have:

        with LocalImportPath(__file__, autoReload=IS_DEBUG):
            import a
            import b
            import c

        It will of course still reload first a, then b, and then c. But for the relative local imports inside a, b, and c (if there are any) it does not know in which order it has to do them, so it just imports them in discovery order. For code where the import order of relative modules matters (which is not great code but also rather common), you have to write a manual reloader which reloads things in order (or just flush all relevant sys.modules entries).

        External Integrations: For those connecting Cinema 4D with external dashboards, cloud assets, or custom web development systems, what protocols or lightweight local servers (e.g., WebSocket, REST endpoints) are you finding most reliable?

        This is an extremely broad question which cannot be answered as is. You can make anything work at the end of day, it depends on what you want to do. When you want to connect web services with an UI (i.e., you have to represent the data somehow), I would recommend having a look at py_cmd_gui_html which showcases how to establish a two-way binding to an HTML page. The example runs the html page locally, but this could of course also be some service on the web. When you need an UI-less data transfer, I would probably go with REST and ship a bit better requests library with your plugin than what Python offers out of the box. You can technically also use the networking classes in the Maxon API Core, particularly UrlInterface but this is a low level API, not a convenience interfaces such as requests or urllib3 for Python, and more a barebones system like the bultin urllib of Python.

        Cheers,
        Ferdinand
