Howdy,What exactly is a "floating" license? I have a customer who is saying that he has a floating license and the plugin serial number isn't working.

I have my plugins set up to only look for the main 142xxxxxxxx number, so that everyone on the server can use the plugin, but the customer is saying the plugin is not registering, which tells me the main number is not the same.

Hmmmm, after getting more info from the customer, it seems the "floating" license isn't the same thing as the license server. The individual seats seem to be time limited, like it was some sort of educational license or something?

etc.... and the clients check those numbers out from the server (I reckon like you check out a book from the library), so each time a client checks out a number from the server it may be a different number.
Can you please shed more light on this type of license? I simply cannot see a way of tying a plugin serial number to a license that is always changing.

Anyway, afaik the only way to handle floating licenses is via a license server. A floating license to my understanding is simply a license that is "floating" in the given environement and is not explicitly linked to a certain C4D installation. So if the license server covers 4 floating licenses and the customers pipeline has 100 seats with C4D installed, only 4 licenses can be simultaneously used while it does not matter which 4 of the 100 seats do so. The license can "float" to any of the seats but only 4 at a time.
In the end, only the license server serial matters. That is my understanding and that is how I handle it. But the support should be able to give you a more definite answer.

If that is so, then the customer will need 6 plugin licenses and will have to re-enter the plugin license every time they lease a floating license (if it's not the same license they leased the last time).

That's the way it works. If they had originally purchased, say, 10 licenses and then add 10 more, the 2020N... will be different since it will go from 202010... to 202020... You can either have them purchase a new set of licenses (if they are paying by seat, for example) or issue a new serial number. It can become a nightmare but I don't understand why they are purchasing multi-licenses with 1 seat each either.

The customer in this case said that he was 'assigned' a specific license (the one unfolded), so there wasn't any issue with needing a bunch of 'potential' license keys.
