Looping Trhough Hierarchies

How do you guys loop through entire complex hierarchies? I don't have a problem looping through simple hierarchies, but I'm creating a script that will have to deal with a very complex hierarchy (a characters rig) and want to prepare for everything. Thanks in advance for any help.
