      I am a Mac-user and have Cinema 4D 8.1.

Can anybody tell me if I could use an build-in ethernet connection to start a little local render farm, or is the only possibility to do this through the use of a browser on the internet network?

      Thanks in advance.

As you've read in the manual of AR the browser is needed in every case, NOT ONLY for an internet network.
The server application of C4D and the clients have to communicate over safari or any other browser.
Connect your macs and then follow the instructions in the manual, it's a little bit tricky with the configuration (IP-adresses, ports, ...) than our standard "plug-and-play-filesharing-network", but it'll work.

        Regards
