Is there a way to flag a group in a parameter resource to include a checkbox ( I think this was possible in v7 ).GROUP THE_GROUP_ID { SET_CHECKBOX; }
Something like that maybe?

No, that's not possible. (And it certainly wasn't possible in R7, since there were no parameter resources at all back then...
You can insert a checkbox as a child of the GROUP with CHECKBOX. -

In the dialog resources of v7 I am almost sure one can create a checkbox in the title of the group. Not really relevant I a am just trying desperately to convince myself I am sane,

I don't recall that possibility. Perhaps you're thinking of the various tab group options? (Combo box and radio buttons.)
Anyway, the R8 parameter description layout is limited in several ways compared to the dialog layout so this doesn't matter. (Creating regular dialogs is of course still possible in R8, just not in the attributes manager.)
