      Hello all,

The clock is counting for Python 2. The Python team will drop support for Python 2.7 in 2020, along with a number of projects (found here) like numpy.

Will Cinema 4D upgrade to Python 3, and if so, when? As I understand, R20 (2018) is going to be a big change, and it would only be logical if it would include a future-proof version of python. R21 would still be in time, but only just months before Python 2 is out-phased.

One reason I'm asking is that I would like to know in advance when to expect having to change all my python-plugins. Another is how long it is still worthwhile writing Python 2 plugins.

      Kind regards,

      Hermen

        Hello Hermen,

usually we are not supposed to talk about future versions of Cinema 4D. Fortunately with R20 everything is a bit different.

For Cinema 4D R20 we'll try to keep changes on the Python side to a minimum, kind of as a counter-weight to the changes on C++ side. Yet, we are aware of the Python development and will certainly not ignore Python 3, I just can't say, yet, when it will be introduced.
In order to stay updated and informed, I'd say, it's a good idea to apply for MAXON Registered Developer[URL-REMOVED].

          Hello Andreas,
Thanks for your quick response. I appreciate your openness, and I understand that you cannot say too much about it. I'll look into the 'Maxon Registered Developer', which seems an interesting way of staying informed.

Looking forward to the good things coming!
          Kind regards,

          Hermen

One of our developers just made me aware, that the VFX Reference Platform is currently planning to switch to Python 3 in 2019. Though I don't want to imply that we will always be on the same level, in this regard we don't seem to be that far off.
