I don't know if this is possible via the SDK, but if it is it would be incredibly helpful if someone could write a plugin that would allow the assignment of different Phong smoothing levels for different polygon selections, a la Max. If this isn't possible via the SDA then Maxon should do it themselves.
The problem is that models imported from CAD/NURBS modelers tend to have areas of large triangles/polygons butted up against areas of small polygons/triangles. In practice, a high Phong setting smooths the small polygons, but it also causes artifacts in flat areas with large polgons. If you lower the Phong setting enough to make the flat areas render flat, you lose the smoothing on the curvy areas. I think this plugin would be *very* popular with anyone who imports geometry from FormZ, Rhino, Autocad, etc. -

in conjunction with this, restriction tags for hypernurbs would also be good, al-la max's meshsmooth selections. weighted hypernurbs is good, but if you come to a point where you want to change direction siddenly, without bringing the lip right up to the edge of the cage, you have to split the polys off which isn't always desireable... so maybe a tag on the hypernurbs object itself that forces hypernurbs to evaluate each selection tag on the object seperately... maybe even with different ammounts of smoothing for each selection tag, and the posiibility for different weights for each selection tag, but if at all possible still retaining a link between the selections (so you don't get holes if the weights are different).
