Scaling on the ends

maybe use the Bulge deformer on your object? it will scale the middle down so then you have to scale the whole thing up.

If you're using XL7 or earlier, there's a plugin called 'Axis Tools' which can help with this (search plugincafe with version 7.303 specified). It lets you quickly move the axis to the edges of the bounding box, after which you can scale the object around that new point.
It doesn't work with V8, BUT in V8 you can place a null object where you would like the origin to be (end of the object in your case), then select both your object and the null. Now click on the mini axis for the null shown in the editor window and that becomes the origin (both objects remain selected). You can now scale or rotate around the null. (Thanks to Kaiskai for this one!)
This only works for transforming complete objects, though.
I'm working on something similar for point/edge/poly selections at the moment, but there's still quite a bit of work to do.
