      Hi,

sry if this is a little not-sdk related but i need a little input from you professional plugin devs 😉

i made a plug thats works with r9 and up and some customers bought it for R9.
i was asked if they can have a r10 serial for free when they update to r10 (and r11 later), so i was wondering what other devs do in this case?

i get paid for a single usage license of my plug that is linked to 1 copy of c4d.

if i give the r10 compatible serial away for free, the plug can be used with r9 and r10+, so the customer would technically own two licenses..

i know this is up to the dev in the end, i was just wondering how others here handle this case..

do you charge customers again who need a serial upgrade, bc their base c4d serial changed?

      thanks for your input,
      cineast

I typically update users with new C4D versions for free. That is, if someone purchased a license under R9, I'll freely send them a new serial number for R10, R11, and so on.

On the other hand, I do charge for major version upgrades of my plugin. So when I go from v1 to v2, there is a small upgrade fee usually due to the major updates and long time of minor updates from version to version without additional cost.

I don´t charge anything for serial changes due to c4d updates. Sure, maybe he uses your plugin with both versions (you cannot guarantee), but this trust in the customer should be the service (he already bought your plugin and did NOT go into a warez forum to dl your plugin).

But it´s up to you of course. If you ask me, maybe not the best idea as a new plugin developer to start with german bureaucracy. 😉

Also note that I *do* charge additional fees for multiple concurrent licenses. That is, if someone wants to run my plugin on six versions of Cinema 4D R10, then they need to purchase an initial license at full cost and additional licenses for the other versions at a significantly reduced cost. This sort of makes it a bulk incentive (so as to avoid forcing them to purchase 'n' full cost licenses). But this practice is completely up to the plugin developer. You may also want to consider what you want to do about 'educational licenses'.

alright thanks, thats how i'll do it then.
no charge for serial upgrades, charge for major updates and accumulated small updates.

dont worry about the bureaucracy getting out of hand, Samir, i always try to meet my customers halfway 😉
Being from Germany too, i feel good customer service is a very important thing, and much appreciated (Servicewüste Deutschland 😉 )

about educational discounts, do you mean student customers (single users), or educational insitutions like schools and universities who would in theory buy a bunch of licenses ?

              thanks,
              Daniel
