Never happen unless Maxon decides it is worth the time/effort/finances. .3ds is a proprietary file format and you have to pay large lumps of cash to AutoDesk in order to license its use for import/export. You'll also not find any applications that support .c4d past v5 or LightWave3D past some old version (and so forth).

Applications like Deep Exploration support .3ds among others for format interchange. Check out their site at www.righthemisphere.com.

The only real alternative here is to use FBX or Wavefront OBJ formats for the exchange.

There is no native .max file support in Cinema4D. Deep exploration actually onyl supports .3ds which is alos supported by Cinema4D. The only conversion tool that I am aware of that can load .max is PolyTrans but you need an installed 3D Max on your system to load the .max files. You may be able to exchange .max files through PolyTrans and the Cinema4D Engeneering bundle but I have not checked it yet.

          cheers,
          Matthias

Sorry about that. Of course, I meant .max and not the interchange format .3ds. Deep Exploration supports .max but requires 3DSMax and DCOM plugin be installed.
