Hi,Is it possible to build C++ plugins for the older versions (R9 - R11.5) using R12?
When I try to use the old code syntax like "obj->GetPosition()" VisualStudio won't let it compile.-ScottA

Unfortunately not. You need the older SDKs.
I asked here a year or two ago if Maxon could supply developers with demos of older C4D versions, but no joy. You could ask them again, maybe they've had a change of heart?

I have SDK versions going back to probably R7. But to test them in those versions, you will need the application as well (more difficult to get a hold of). Hard to say the best solution to this support issue.

Yes, I agree. It meant that I was doing Mac development for R10 and 10.5 using an old demo version I found on a book cover disc - I think it was 10.08 or something, not the 10.111 that was the final R10 version - and hoping it would all work in R10 and R10.5 on the Mac.
Fortunately, it did. But it's ridiculous that developers can't get the old demo versions from Maxon. They should be downloadable from here. I just can't see why not.
As Robert says, you can get the old SDK docs readily enough but not the app or the api libraries you need. I've decided not to support versions earlier than R11 any more and this is one reason for that.

They do not want to support old stuff and are more than happy if new plugins target new Cinema versions. I think thats just in the nature of software development, that you want to get rid of the old versions and have people update to actual versions. The legacy just cost's money and doesn't bring in any new ...

Yes, but think about it from the point of view of the user and developer. The user may simply not be able to afford (or willing) to upgrade to a new version of Cinema. Then not only are they using an obsolescent version of the app but they can't get new plugins either.
For the developer, the users of old versions might be a diminishing market but it's still a market which the developers don't have if they can't build for that version. If you only own R12 and you want to develop versions of your plugin for the users of R11 and R11.5 (still lots of them around) then you can't. After all, the primary devlopment on one version takes 95% of the development time, porting to earlier versions of Cinema is (usually) fairly easy.
I guess I would have hoped Maxon would make life a little easier for us than that.
