<p dir="auto">The forum is back in read and write mode after it has been in read only mode in the last 24 hours. One of the changes we carried out is that we bulk deleted users that met the following criteria:</p>
<ul>
<li>had less than one posting¹ AND</li>
<li>were not associated with a whitelisted web domain such as <code>maxon.net</code> AND</li>
<li>met at least one of the criteria:

so, I fixed this now, in the sense that the TOC is now back in these classic API type and module pages.
[image: 1713774613887-c2f5944c-90e4-49f9-a194-44f7be96b281-image-resized.png]
I renamed the old a bit wordily named "Functions Signatures" and "Functions Documentation" to Overview and Functions (or Methods for classes) . Opposed to the old pre 2024.3 TOCs (which were completely broken in many ways), these categories now also show up in the TOC:
[image: 1713775118359-adcc5c03-d5fd-4f97-b206-7d69cef2d81e-image-resized.png]
[image: 1713774646259-bc7bac63-8959-487a-8aa7-81e729fcc92a-image-resized.png]
The old Types and Inheritance section has been merged into root element as I do not see a good reason why it should appear in the middle of the page. The obvious thing would be to now add links to the individual elements on a page, so that you can quick-jump to a particular function. But that turned out to be not so easy with the mess we made there before and stubborn docutils. As evident by the C4DAtom example and other cases our TOC trees are very broken in this part of the docs and I now already almost spent two days with fixing things to this state.
This will be shipped in the current state with the next release of Cinema 4D. When I have some time to waste, I will try to add the function links.

 The manual and maxon API TOCs are unaffected by this, they continue to work as intended. The classic API does its own thing here (as always ) which why this is such a mess.

<p dir="auto">In a changing security landscape Maxon Computer continues to deliver products which protect the systems of our users. In that spirit we announce a change to how we will treat code-signed binaries from third parties in future releases.</p>
<h4>Upcoming Changes to Loading Signed Binaries</h4>
<blockquote>
<p dir="auto"><img src="http://developers.maxon.net/forum/assets/plugins/nodebb-plugin-emoji/emoji/android/26a0.png?v=0b8ddba251d" class="not-responsive emoji emoji-android emoji--warning" style="height:23px;width:auto;vertical-align:middle" title=":warning:" alt="⚠" /> The upcoming releases of Cinema 4D will not accept code signed C++ plugin binaries whose certificate has become invalid. A Cinema 4D installation which attempts to boot with a C++ plugin with such invalid certificate, will inform the user that the respective file is faulty, that the related plugin must be reinstalled, and then <strong>shut down</strong> Cinema 4D. The user will only be able to successfully boot Cinema 4D once he or she has removed your plugin.</p>
</blockquote>
<p dir="auto">It is therefore important that you deliver your C++ plugins in one of the two forms listed below:</p>
<ol>
<li>As signed binaries with a valid certificate,</li>
<li>or as unsigned binaries.</li>
</ol>
<p dir="auto">Plugins for Windows which have been singend with a certificate which at the time of validation has expired are still valid when they are time-stamped and have either no expiration date on the time-stamp or have not yet reached the expiration-date of the time-stamp. In general, you should avoid shipping Windows plugins with an expired certificate.</p>
<h4>About the Necessity of Code Signing</h4>
<p dir="auto"><a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Code_signing" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow ugc">Code signing</a> is the mechanism with which operating systems ensure that a to be executed binary has not been altered since it has been shipped by a vendor. Code signing is therefore not only in the interest of users who want to avoid executing modified binaries but also in the interest of application vendors to signal their trustworthiness.</p>
<p dir="auto">We recommend that all C++ plugins are code signed in the manner lined out in the code signing guides provided by <a href="https://developer.apple.com/support/code-signing/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow ugc">Apple</a> and <a href="https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/win32/seccrypto/cryptography-tools" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow ugc">Microsoft</a>; we advise against shipping plugins signed with self-provided certificates intended for development only. Our Cinema 4D C++ SDK documentation also contains a section about <a href="https://developers.maxon.net/docs/cpp/2024_3_0/page_maxonapi_dev_macos.html#page_maxonapi_dev_macos_notarization" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow ugc">code signing on macOS</a>. We plan to add a similar section for Windows in an upcoming release.</p>
<blockquote>
<p dir="auto"><img src="http://developers.maxon.net/forum/assets/plugins/nodebb-plugin-emoji/emoji/android/2139.png?v=0b8ddba251d" class="not-responsive emoji emoji-android emoji--information_source" style="height:23px;width:auto;vertical-align:middle" title=":information_source:" alt="ℹ" /> Code signing is a practice that should be followed for C++ plugin binaries for both on macOS and Windows. For Python plugins singing is technically not necessary but could be viewed as good practice.</p>

<p dir="auto">due to an oversight, we have unintentionally broken the C++ ABI compatibility between 2024.2 and 2024.3. We will fix this issue in an upcoming hotfix that follows 2024.3.1 (2024.3.1 does not contain the fix).</p>
<blockquote>
<p dir="auto"><img src="http://developers.maxon.net/forum/assets/plugins/nodebb-plugin-emoji/emoji/android/2139.png?v=0b8ddba251d" class="not-responsive emoji emoji-android emoji--information_source" style="height:23px;width:auto;vertical-align:middle" title=":information_source:" alt="ℹ" /> What is an ABI and how does it affect me? The ABI compatibility determines if plugins with a lower minor version are compatible to a higher minor version within a major release. E.g., if a plugin compiled with the 2024.1.0 SDK also runs under Cinema 4D 2024.3.1. We guarantee ABI upwards compatibility within one major version, this promise is temporarily being broken here. </blockquote>
<h3>Affected Entities</h3>
<p dir="auto">Binary incompatibilities have been specifically introduced for:</p>
<ul>
<li>NimbusBaseInterface::FindCorrespondingBaseList()</li>
<li>NimbusBaseInterface::FindOrCreateCorrespondingBaseList()</li>
<li>NimbusBaseInterface::GetGraphNodeFromBaseList()</li>
<li>NimbusBaseInterface::GetNodePathFromBaseList()</li>
</ul>
<p dir="auto">Rendering in effect both <a href="https://developers.maxon.net/docs/cpp/2024_3_0/classmaxon_1_1_nimbus_base_interface.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow ugc">maxon::NimbusBaseInterface</a> and a reference to such object, a <code>maxon:NimbusBaseRef</code>, unusable.</p>
<h3>Effect for Developers and Users</h3>
<p dir="auto">All 2024.0.X to 2024.2.X plugins using the affected entities are not upwards compatible beyond 2024.2.X. Since the C++ SDK is using the type <code>NimbusBaseInterface</code> too, it will raise a critical stop when debugging with a 2024.0 up to 2024.2 SDK against a 2024.3 Cinema 4D binary. Below you can see an example of the critical stop being raised.</p>
<table class="table table-bordered table-striped">

<h3>Solution</h3>
<p dir="auto">Maxon Computer will provide a hotfix Cinema 4D 2024.3.2 which will solve the problem. The hotfix is to be expected within the next two weeks. In the mean time, you can do the following:</p>
<h4>Developers using NimbusBaseInterface</h4>
<p dir="auto">Until the hotfix, you can only tell your customers that your plugin is not fully compatible with 2024.3. There are no other preliminary fixes.</p>
<h4>Developers using the sdk.zip</h4>
<p dir="auto">We know that many developers are using the sdk.zip as the home for their project. Here you have a few options until the hotfix arrives.</p>
<ul>
<li>Do not debug against 2024.3.X</li>
<li>Remove the line <code>plugins/example.assets;\</code> from <code>\sdk\plugins\project\projectdefintion.txt</code> and rebuild your solution using the <a href="https://developers.maxon.net/docs/cpp/2024_3_0/page_maxonapi_projecttool.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow ugc">project tool</a>.</li>
<li>You can also simply ignore the critical stop and press continue once when you boot. Since you are not shipping the example.asset.xdl64/dylib binaries with your plugin, it will not be affected by this.</li>
</ul>

as always, things took me a little bit longer than expected, but links on the forum should be patched now. All postings should correctly display attachments and references to downloads and the docs should also correctly resolve again.
I also scanned the forum and removed or translated URLs. This concerns for once legacy ASP.net forum URLs which have been replaced with the matching NodeBB URL (to be found in the Legacy Forum, e.g., here). Removed have also been a substantial amount of non-resolving URLs. Most relevant are here links into our old developers.maxon.net platform, such as download and posting links. They cannot be mapped to new content hand therefore had to be removed. For such postings you find then find [URL-REMOVED] markup in the postings to signal where links have been removed. Find an example here.
Finally, I have also replaced all legacy documentation links ( /docs/Cinema4DCPPSDK/... and /docs/Cinema4DPythonSDK/...) from before we distinguished between versions in our online docs. While legacy links will continue to resolve, e.g., link, you should always use the new URL scheme.
There will be no further maintenance work on the forum in the near future.
Cheers,
Ferdinand

The Cinema 4D C++ SDK offers the full tool set of the public Cinema 4D API. It is an excellent choice for experienced developers who want to implement computationally demanding plugins or plugin types such as custom render engines or material systems that are exclusive to the C++ API.
Quickstart

Online C++ Documentation: The most recent Cinema 4D C++ online documentation. To bookmark a link to the most recent version of the documentation, bookmark developers.maxon.net/docs/cpp/ (when you bookmark a link you followed, you will bookmark a specific version).
Offline C++ Documentation: The official most recent Cinema 4D C++ offline documentation. Unlike the online version, you cannot switch between multiple versions here.
C++ Code Examples: The C++ SDK code examples. You will need the frameworks provided in an sdk.zip to run these.
Project Tool: A tool to generate Visual Studio and XCode solutions for Cinema 4D C++ API projects.
SDK Database: The SDK Asset API database, containing assets used by code examples.

 To be able to compile the code examples, one requires t+the frameworks provided in the sdk.zip of a Cinema 4D installation. See Getting Started for details.

Development Environment
To build plugins for a specific SDK, one must meet the development environments listed below. And while it might be possible to deviate from these requirements from time to time, doing so will be out of scope of support; when you run into technical problems and ask for support, we will ask you to match the required environment.

  The Application Binary Interface (ABI) marks the range of compatibility of SDKs and plugins compiled for them. All versions that are binary compatible with each other can run your plugin, if the SDK version is equal to or lower than the Cinema 4D version. So, a plugin compiled for R21.0 will also run in R21.1, S22.0, and S22.1 because they all share one ABI. But you cannot run a plugin compiled for S22.0 (using S22.0 features) in R21.0. For the greatest range of compatibility, it is therefore often best to compile for the earliest version within an ABI one can use for the feature one requires.
